Yeah I'm kinda curious as to why there's no link up for it either.

John is at approx 35.7 million (48-49 hours played?). Another 8 or so hours until he breaks the record.

Note: Editor-in-Chief is out of town right now.

Note: Someone who's typing this message spent 5 hours today contacting the press and getting media coverage to share in this... and it's finally taking. That is going to do more good for this than a link on the front page will.

Just broke the record as of a few minutes ago. I couldn't load the actual JTV page, but I was watching from a mirror site.

Congrats John! Amazing score! I never thought I'd see the day when that score fell.

This was beyond amazing!

This looks like last year was the warmup for Marathons and this year's going to be the cream of the crop!

Congratulations John!

Huge deal... I actually got a call from India as it was ending from our founder Walter Day, who got word of it out there!

Great moment and if he never plays Asteroids again I won't blame him :p

My husband was annoyed with me for sitting and watching (even though I only watched the last two hours... I'd watched earlier in the day/day before, though). It was 28 years in the making - c'mon!

I watched for a couple hours during the day on Monday. I found out about it on aurcade.com I was unable to watch the gameplay camera due to the lag, especially with all 3 videos playing at once. so, I just left the room view video on. which was fine. I had fun chatting with people and watching Bill give John a massage. ;) I loved how Bill quickly washed his hands after giving the massage.

Super cool! Congrats John! I popped in to watch some of it from like 17-18 mil. I just amazed at the endurance.

did they say it will take 2 months to verify? wow, that is crazy! why is that? because of the drug test or something? but, a drug test does not take that long.

awesome job John!
will we see you in August?

When he needed a bathroom break, he stepped away from the machine and shed a few lives until his return. It got a little scary towards the end, because he started to run alarmingly short on extra lives as a result of his final bathroom break. He recovered well shortly thereafter, but not without giving all of us onlookers quite the scare first. ;)

Like all marathon attempts, you rack up a crapload of lives... but staying under 255 or so (to prevent bit-rolling errors) before taking a break. The game (& video tape) just keeps running while your lives count drops down to a semi-manageable level.

The 2 month estimate is probably for the poor ref that has to verify every hour of video tape as Asteroids rules have an anti-leaching rule in it with UFO's.

Actually no. The rules for arcade Asteroids includes the following:

"Special Note: The TG board of directors has agreed that the technique of shooting down back-to-back command ships at the end of each stage has been deemed legally permissible and is not considered 'point scrabbing', after much consideration. This confirmation of TG's stance on this decision is dated 7/19/02."

Shoot saucers to your heart's content.

Cheers

Rob
